How was your Pesach?

Pesach in Whistler..... to answer Estie's question, was.....quite an experience!
We had a great time. It's a 5 diamond hotel. luxurious. the city is a ski resort. the real estate is average 3 million. I'm sure you get the picture.

the food was gormet all the way, each peice of gefilte fish was stuffed with salmon and had a long thin zuccni slice wrapped around it with parsley and chives on top. there was also white and red chrein in chocholoate chip dots around the plate. but this was only the first time fish was served. each time was something else.

Breakfast for the crowd was Create your own omlet stand, with choped olives, onions, peppers, cheese and other veggies. There was french potatoe starch toast and blue berry pancakes. Cheeses wrapped in pistachio nut, olives and all different exquisite types.

Until pesach started and we didn't eat what was being served to everyone. instead there was a separate cook for us. well, this separate cook didn't understand that parsley is an unpeeled vegetable, or that peeled beets from the can are not okay for us. so we ate a lot of boiled chicken which was served gormet (a bit rare, like Miriam likes it) and lots of Matza, fruit and Grape juice!

There were over 350 pple there. a nice spanish speaking crowd from Mexico city that had a lot of birthdays over pesach. There were quite a few lubavitchers from all over also. Then there were those from monsey, flatbush, lakewood, california, NJ... there was even one streimel. the level of observance was very wide. there were shaitels, hats and no hair coverings. lange payes, and no payes. beards, and no yarmulkes. so you get the kind of crowd there was. But it was soooo beautiful to see how everyone interacted.

My father in law had some heated night long discussions teaching chassidus to litvishe who just wouldn't except it. His talks were amazing. besides for his basic speeches he taught the story of Elisha inside, al pi chasidus (like Zushe did a couple yrs ago for the kollel in cleveland) pple were dumbstruck! He also taught the story of Chet Eitz Hadaas, which people argued with him. it was quite freilach.

Mendele had the best time of all. his cousins didn't stop playing with him. in particular Rivka from S. Cruz and her siblings. He was so friendly to everyone and has been babbling away every since. (he was so excited when we came back to our apt. bldg, he yapped the entire way up to our apt and got even more excited when he saw his familiar toys... i wish I videoed it!)

The best part was the nonstop hanging out with family. We ate in a separate room on plastic dishes with our 'special meals' There was lots of quality time spent there. Our meals lasted longer than the waiters shift!

A huge thanks to Bubby Friedman who stocked up the room with toys from Walmart (which was a 45 min drive each way) so the kinderlach should have what to do.

There was a day camp there (which i was asked to be counselor. Not wanting the responsibility with Mendele around, I said, I'll be counted as a fill in if necessary. Well, necessary it was, so we had circle time, went swimming, had trips and got to know lots of new kids. It was good practice having Mendele around and making sure the counselors had what they needed etc.) While parents dropped their kids off at camp, they either went to shul or heard a speach (over Y"T) or went skiing, snowmobiling, dogsledding, snowboarding and many other activities which when we looked into maybe doing one of them with the family learned the cost is about $175 per person!! This was when we really realized the amount of gelt that pple who go to hotels like this have. they did these activities daily with their entire families!! So we took the kids ice skating for $10 a person and rock wall climbing for $12 a head.

One elevator was put on Shabbos Mode, for those that would use it (pple stayied on the 8th floor) typical to happen, kids played around, got stuck and the elevator company had to come fix it. My point of saying this is that it was scary for the little kids who were just running around. We had to make sure that they were far away from the elevators.

There was also a tea room which was the 24 hr stocked area with fresh fruit, drinks and snacks.
Chol Hamoed there was entertainment every night. Mad science Juggling and a magic show for the kids. Concert, comedy and kumztiz for the adults.

All in all, we wish you were there with us. But at least you were never hungry! And you were spared the 24 hr travel experience!
